Jonathan Twingley is a visual artist and writer.
His drawings and paintings have been published by the Atlantic, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Nation, the Johns Hopkins University Gazette, the Chronicle of Higher Education and the New Republic among many others.
He is the author and illustrator of THE BADLANDS SALOON: AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL (Scribner/Simon & Schuster).
His work has been recognized by the New York Society of Illustrators, the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators (Bronze Medal), American Illustration, Communication Arts Magazine, The Best of News Design, the Society of Publication Designers, Creative Quarterly and PRINT magazine’s New Visual Artists Review.
Exhibitions of his drawings and paintings have hung in New York City, Florida, North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota.
From 2007 to 2022 he served as Adjunct Associate Professor in the illustration program at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In 2022 he joined the faculty of the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Beginning in 2018, his digital self-publishing initiative – WORDS & PICTURES PRESS – has published 10 catalog collections focused primarily on his work in sketchbooks. 2022’s hardcover release, WORDS & PICTURES (VOLUME ONE), tells the story of the author’s Pandemic year (2020) by way of a chronological curation of posts made to social media sites. The most recent publication (also in hardcover), WALL, PAPER (WORDS & PICTURES VOLUME TWO) (2023), collects over a dozen unconventional sketchbooks in their entirety.
Born and raised in Bismarck, North Dakota, Twingley took a Bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1996 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1998.
He lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey.
